Risk Engineer - LIU Oil & Gas

The job holder's main role is to provide technical support to Underwriting and Claims teams for assigned lines of business(s). This role performs the planning, organizing, analysis and evaluation of risks, regardless of complexity, both on a desk review basis and on-site risk engineering surveys to provide risk assessments to enable Underwriters to make accurate and profitable underwriting decisions. Also provides risk analysis for claims mitigation.

Responsibilities:

1. Plans, organizes and performs desk based risk appraisals for assigned lines of business(s) to provide risk analysis information to Underwriters. The risk appraisal process includes preparation of a plant/process/product description, assessment of plant/process/product design, hazards and adequacy of mitigation measures, assessment of management systems/procedures and plant protection facilities, and loss estimate calculations.

2. Conducts on-site risk engineering surveys for existing and prospective Clients, as required by underwriters. Produces either a brief summary report for internal use or a detailed marketing risk engineering survey report for Underwriters, Brokers, or the Client as required by LIU guidelines.

3. Assumes ownership for allocated accounts including attendance on surveys, follow-up of key recommendations and ensuring that risk engineering information on file is up to date.

4. Provides technical input on LIU claims including review of loss adjuster reports and site visits to identify areas for claims mitigation and lessons learned. These lessons learned should be communicated to other Engineers/Underwriters and provide a basis for future loss prevention investigation during surveys.

5. Maintains professional credibility and consistently demonstrates technical expertise and sound judgment.

6. Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of the assigned lines of business(s) including process technology, loss prevention, construction and other related issues that may impact the underwriting decision making process or LIU profitability. The job holder is expected to actively pursue professional development in order to develop and maintain knowledge in these areas.

7. Participates in business development and marketing activities for assigned lines of business(s).

Bachelors of Science degree in a technical discipline, such as Chemical, Process, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
The job holder will be expected to possess at least seven years experience in relevant process industries and should have a background in at least one of the following areas in a managerial, technical or consultancy role; Operations, Maintenance, Process Engineering, Loss Prevention, Construction, Risk Management or Project Management.
The job holder will also be expected to possess at least three years experience within the insurance sector in the assigned line of business(s).
Job holders with no previous industry experience but who have extensive insurance experience in a variety of relevant industry sectors will also be considered for this position.
Demonstrated strong communication and listening skills in order to develop and maintain relationships with Underwriters, Risk Engineers, Claims teams, other LIU Staff and Clients.
Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate important technically related information within the Risk Engineering, Underwriting and Claims groups.
Demonstrated ability in advance level research, evaluation and analysis.
Demonstrated strong marketing skills to participate in new/renewal business development.
Demonstrated ability to effectively use required software applications, such as MicroSoft Office Suite. Should be able to create/modify documents and complex spreadsheets.
Position requires regular travel.
