Responsibilities

This position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

Technical leader and manager for mechanical engineering in the Research & Development group. Supervises, mentors, motivates and provides direction to mechanical engineering staff consisting of mechanical engineers and technicians. Prioritizes projects and activities for direct reports and contractors/consultants.
Involved with establishing the vision, strategy and executable plans for developing and growing the mechanical engineering skills, competencies, and capabilities at Thoratec.
Subject matter expert for mechanical engineering and mechanical systems.
Provides technical guidance and engineering support for a variety of cross functional activities from project initiation to product launch to sustaining engineering.
Familiarity with design, fabrication and assembly of conceptual models, prototypes, tooling, motorized test fixtures, data acquisition systems and physiological simulation equipment.
Works on complex technical electro-mechanical problems where analysis of data requires an in-depth evaluation. Applies sound judgment and structured problem solving approaches to determine appropriate solutions for complex and diverse issues and projects.

Minimum Qualifications

B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) with a minimum ten (10) years engineering and product development experience, including five (5) years medical device industry (ISO/GMP) and supervisory experience. M.S. or Ph.D. is desirable.
Must have proven design and development experience areas such as fluid dynamics, pneumatics, finite element analysis, tolerance analysis and materials selection.
Expertise in the use of standard mechanical lab equipment such as Instron tensile testers, accelerated cyclic testers, multimetersis .
Experienced with design software packages such as SolidWorks or ProE.
Must have familiarity with relevant standards and regulatory requirements (FDA, GMP, ISO, TUV, UL, CSA).

Job Location: HOUSTON, TX

A well established client located in the Houston, TX area has an opening for a Senior Project Manager that has experience in the petrochemical / refinery industry preferably with retrofit and modular projects. This position will be responsible for extensive client interface both domestic and international and to oversee and manage the project budgets, schedules and cost expenditures of assigned projects. A good knowledge of modular system fabrication, including structural, piping, vessel, insulation, rotating equipment and I&E design is needed. You must have a demonstrated ability to manage subcontracts for engineering, fabrication of piping, structural steel and vessels, and other services such as painting, insulation and I&E work. You will also be responsible for completing or reviewing scope of work, requisitions and purchase order to subcontractors as well as to review subcontractor work including engineering documents, estimate personnel needs and schedule and assign work to meet required completion dates. A B.S in Engineering or related fields and/or 10 plus years demonstrated experience is required. Conceptualize, design and develop system specifications, applying knowledge of technology and materials to produce a design that considers; functionality, appearance, produceability, materials availability, and cost. Perform these tasks within the communicated criteria and time frame.

3. Coordinate with the involved shops to assure that the design criteria are met.

Communicate designs, data, and specifications to Lead Design Engineers, Shop Managers, and shop personnel in a clear and concise manner. Revise designs as required to maintain compliance with the design criteria / specification and maintain maximum shop productivity throughout the project. Assist in the resolution of problems and delays, in a time frame acceptable to the aircraft/project schedule. 4. Perform product/vendor searches.

Assist in the identification of potential products and/or vendors that meet the design criteria / specifications. Coordinate proposed vendors and products with KHC purchasing and material procurement departments, and report findings and recommend actions to the Lead Design Engineer and/or Production Manager.

5. Arrange sample product delivery/acquisition for prototype evaluation.

When assigned, or when needed for a design project, obtain sample products as available from a vendor.

6. Perform value engineering.

As assigned, perform value analysis and present options with a recommended course of action for assigned projects to Design Lead for approval.


B.S. in Mechanical or Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering preferred. Will also consider applicants having an Associates-level degree in Mechanical Design who possess considerable CATIA, Key Creator / CADKEY, or other 3-D Solid Modeling design software proficiency.

Ability to perform all job functions effectively both independently and within a workgroup.

Strong communication skills and ability to professionally represent KHC during customer and FAA meetings.

Familiarity with FAA Federal Aviation Regulations desired.
