The Civil Engineering Technician provides support to the engineering staff which deliver technical assistance to a diverse clientele consisting of livestock and cash-grain farmers, rural non-farm residents and urban land users.

Major Duties:

Serves as a Civil Engineering Technician and provides the primary point of technical contact for Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software used by NRCS staff. Provides training to NRCS/LCD staff in CAD software utilization, foundation investigations, engineering design/construction plan preparation, construction inspection, and use of engineering design tools. Assists the State Engineer with tracking operation and maintenance activities for PL-566 storm structures and maintains the dam inventory database. Develops designs and construction plans for traditional and complex projects that utilize engineering practices such as waterways, grade stabilization structures, floodwater retarding dams, streambank protection, wetland restorations, fish production ponds, and animal waste control systems.


Qualifications:

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors. Qualifying education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education.

- Knowledge of NRCS principal conservation programs.
- Knowledge of regulatory processes associated with federal, state, county, and - municipal permits typically required for agricultural activities.
- Ability to do engineering surveys, engineering designs, and construction plan preparation necessary for the planning, design, construction layout, inspection, and as-built documentation of basic conservation practices.
- Ability to apply engineering practices with land users and units of government.
- Ability to determine runoff volume, peak rate of discharge, flow capacity, and velocity for the design of basic conservation practices.
